Minor Chord – Definition

A minor chord is a triad consisting of a root, a minor third, and a perfect fifth.

What is a Minor Chord?

A minominor chord is built from a minor third (three semitones) between the root and the third, followed by a major third (four semitones) between the third and the fifth. This interval pattern creates the characteristic sound of the minor triad.

Minor chords are commonly written with the letter m after the root note, such as Am, Dm, or Cm. They are among the most frequently used chords in Western music.

How is a Minor Chord used in piano playing?

Pianists use minor chords in accompaniment, chord progressions, arpeggios, and song arrangements across many musical styles. Learning minor chord shapes in every key is a fundamental part of piano technique and harmony.

Understanding minor chords also provides the basis for learning more advanced chord types, inversions, and harmonic progressions.
