Minor – Definition
Minor is one of the two principal tonalities in Western music. It is characterized by a minor third above the tonic, giving it a sound that differs from the major mode.
What is Minor?
The defining feature of the minor mode is the interval of a minor third between the tonic and the third scale degree. Three forms of the minor scale are commonly recognised: natural minor, harmonic minor, and melodic minor, each with its own interval pattern and musical function.
Minor keys are widely used in classical music, jazz, pop, rock, film music, and many other styles.
How is Minor used in piano playing?
Pianists learn minor scales and minor chords as a fundamental part of technique, harmony, and improvisation. Recognising the relationship between major and minor keys also helps with accompaniment, transposition, and understanding chord progressions.
