Major is one of the two primary tonalities in Western music, the other being minor. Major keys and chords are often associated with a bright, open and stable sound.

What is major?

A major scale is built from seven different notes following the interval pattern whole step – whole step – half step – whole step – whole step – whole step – half step. A major chord consists of a root, a major third and a perfect fifth.

The major scale forms the basis of much of Western music theory and provides the foundation for major keys, diatonic harmony and chord construction.
