Natural Notes – Definition
The natural notes are the seven basic note names used in Western music: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. On the piano, they correspond to the white keys.
What are Natural Notes?
The natural notes repeat in every octave across the keyboard. Most adjacent natural notes are separated by a whole step, except between B–C and E–F, where only a half step exists. Sharps and flats are created by raising or lowering these natural notes.
Together, the natural notes form the foundation of scales, chords, key signatures, and music notation.
Why are Natural Notes important for pianists?
Learning the natural notes is one of the first steps in understanding the piano keyboard. Once pianists recognize the white-key pattern, it becomes much easier to locate notes, build chords, and learn scales in every key.
A solid knowledge of the natural notes provides the foundation for reading music, playing by ear, and understanding harmony.
