A percussionist is a musician who plays percussion instruments such as hand drums, shakers, tambourines, mallet instruments, cymbals, and many other rhythm-based instruments.
What is a Percussionist?
Unlike a drum set player, a percussionist often performs on a wide variety of instruments that add rhythmic texture, colour, and musical accents to an ensemble. Depending on the musical style, percussionists may play Latin percussion, orchestral percussion, world percussion, or auxiliary percussion instruments.
Percussion plays an essential role in shaping groove, dynamics, and the overall rhythmic character of a performance.
How does a Percussionist relate to piano playing?
The piano is also considered a percussion instrument because its strings are struck by hammers. Pianists can improve their rhythmic feel by listening to percussion patterns and incorporating similar accents, syncopation, and rhythmic phrasing into their playing.
