Portamento – Definition
Portamento is a musical effect in which the pitch glides smoothly and continuously from one note to another without distinct steps between the pitches.
What is Portamento?
Portamento occurs naturally on instruments capable of continuous pitch changes, such as the human voice, violin, trombone, and fretless bass. Unlike a glissando, which may pass through clearly defined notes, portamento produces a smooth, uninterrupted transition between pitches.
Modern synthesizers and digital keyboards often include a portamento or glide function that automatically creates this effect between successive notes.
How is Portamento used in keyboard playing?
Keyboard players commonly use portamento with synthesizer lead sounds, bass patches, and electronic instruments to create expressive pitch transitions. Acoustic pianos cannot produce true portamento because each key generates a fixed pitch.
Understanding portamento helps keyboard players create more expressive performances and use synthesizer sounds more effectively in contemporary music.
