Sampler – Definition
A sampler is a hardware instrument or software application that records, stores, and plays back digital audio samples. It allows recorded sounds to be performed musically from a keyboard or MIDI controller.
What is a Sampler?
Unlike a synthesizer, which generates sound electronically, a sampler reproduces recorded audio. Modern samplers often use multisampling, where an instrument is recorded across many notes and dynamic levels to create a realistic playing experience.
Most samplers also include filters, envelopes, effects, and modulation controls that allow musicians to shape and customize the original recordings.
How is a Sampler used in piano playing?
Many professional keyboard players use samplers to access high-quality piano libraries, orchestral instruments, vintage keyboards, and sound effects. Software samplers make it possible to perform thousands of different sounds from a single MIDI keyboard.
