Slide – Definition
A slide is a performance technique in which a player moves smoothly from one note to another without a clear break between the pitches. It is commonly used on guitar, bass, string instruments, and some electronic instruments.
What is a Slide?
Slides create expressive transitions and add character to melodies and solos. Depending on the instrument, the player may maintain continuous contact with the string or use an electronic pitch glide to connect the notes.
On the piano, a similar effect is usually called a glissando, since the instrument consists of fixed pitches rather than continuously variable ones.
What can pianists learn from Slide techniques?
Although true slides are not possible on an acoustic piano, pianists can imitate the expressive effect through grace notes, blues ornaments, and glissandos across the keyboard.
Understanding slide techniques helps pianists develop a more expressive and vocal approach to phrasing, particularly in blues, gospel, and rock styles.
