F minor is a minor key based on the note F. Its key signature contains four flats: B♭, E♭, A♭ and D♭.

What is F minor?

The F natural minor scale consists of the notes F, G, A♭, B♭, C, D♭ and E♭. Its relative major is A-flat major, which shares the same key signature.

The primary chords in F minor are F minor (i), B-flat minor (iv) and C minor (v). In harmonic minor, the dominant chord is often changed to C major or C7 by raising the seventh scale degree to create a stronger resolution.

How is F minor used in piano playing?

F minor is an excellent key for developing confidence with flat key signatures. Practicing its scales, chords and common chord progressions improves keyboard technique and strengthens your understanding of minor-key harmony.

Studying F minor also develops music-reading skills and helps pianists become comfortable playing in less common key signatures.
