Composition – Definition

A composition is a complete musical work created by organizing musical elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm, and form into a coherent whole.

What is a Composition?

A composition may be written down as musical notation, recorded, or preserved in another form. It can range from a short piano piece to a full symphony, pop song, jazz work, or film score.

Composing involves making artistic decisions about melody, harmony, rhythm, form, instrumentation, dynamics, and musical development. Unlike improvisation, a composition is generally intended to exist as a repeatable musical work, even though individual performances may differ in interpretation.

How is a Composition used in piano playing?

Pianists perform compositions from many musical styles, including classical, jazz, pop, rock, and contemporary music. Studying a composition helps develop an understanding of musical structure, harmony, phrasing, and form.

Learning how compositions are constructed also supports arranging, improvisation, and songwriting by revealing how musical ideas are developed into complete works.
