Vocal Music – Definition
Vocal music is music written to be performed by one or more singers, either with or without instrumental accompaniment. The human voice serves as the primary musical instrument.
What is Vocal Music?
Vocal music includes solo songs, duets, choirs, vocal ensembles, and many other forms of singing. Some vocal music is accompanied by instruments, while other styles, such as a cappella singing, are performed without instrumental support.
Composers and arrangers consider vocal range, tessitura, phrasing, breathing, and lyrical expression when writing music for singers.
Why is Vocal Music important for pianists?
Many pianists spend much of their musical lives accompanying singers. Understanding vocal music helps pianists support phrasing, breathing, dynamics, and expressive interpretation rather than competing with the melody.
Developing strong accompaniment skills allows pianists to create musical performances in which the piano and voice work together as a unified musical expression.
