C is one of the seven natural musical notes and serves as the starting point for the C major scale. For piano players, it is one of the most important reference notes on the keyboard.
What is C?
The note C is the root of the C major scale, the only major scale with no sharps or flats in its key signature. On the piano, every C is the white key immediately to the left of a group of two black keys, making it easy to locate anywhere on the keyboard.
Middle C (C4) is the best-known C and is widely used as a reference point in piano playing and music notation. It has a frequency of approximately 261.63 Hz in standard concert pitch (A = 440 Hz).
How is C used in piano playing?
C is often the first note beginners learn because it provides a clear visual landmark on the keyboard. It also forms the basis of the C major chord and the C major scale, making it an ideal starting point for understanding harmony and keyboard geography.
