D minor is a minor key based on the note D. Its key signature contains one flat: B♭.

What is D minor?

The D natural minor scale consists of the notes D, E, F, G, A, B♭ and C. Its relative major is F major, which shares the same key signature.

The primary chords in D minor are D minor (i), G minor (iv) and A minor (v). In harmonic minor, the dominant chord is often changed to A major or A7 by raising the seventh scale degree to create a stronger resolution.

How is D minor used in piano playing?

D minor is an excellent key for learning minor harmony and becoming familiar with flat key signatures. It provides a natural introduction to minor chord progressions and the relationship between natural and harmonic minor.
