E is one of the seven natural musical notes and the third note of the C major scale. On the piano, E is the white key immediately to the right of the group of two black keys.
What is E?
In the equal temperament tuning system, E has a fixed pitch and serves many important harmonic functions. In the treble clef, middle-register E is written on the bottom line of the staff. The note E forms the major third of C major and can also be altered to E-sharp (E#) or E-flat (E♭).
E appears naturally in countless scales, chords and melodies throughout Western music.
